In the early days, the settlers would band together and build their houses nearby for safety....it seems that we have to do the opposite now....sad.

We have had straight-line winds of 80 MPH, thunder and lightning like I couldn't believe and monsoons of rain. I have yet to see a tornado... knock on wood.

As a child, living in Arkansas, we had our back porch ripped off and thrown over the house into the main street.  I slept through it...  My father woke me up to help drag the porch pieces off of the street...

Not fun...

From age five to fourteen, my family lived on what amounted to a mini homestead, about 40 miles southwest of St. Louis, not very far from I-44.

Our address was Villa Ridge, which was the boonies. But we were not in Villa Ridge. Well outside of it. Sort of in the boonies of the boonies.

Grey Summit was not too far away, nor Pacific. Washington was further.

But I have to say, in the late 50s, through the 60s, and into the 70s, it was a great prepping area. Last time I was through there, about 20 years ago, St. Louis bedroom communities were being built within a mile of where we had lived. The spring and creek I used to go to all the time was now flowing through a culvert, with no access at all to the actual spring outlet. Sigh.

Just my opinion.

My wife grew up outside of Imperial, west of town a few miles. We were married there in her folks back yard back then, it had a lovely view of a green hill about a mile in the distance, over a valley of three dairy farms.

That's all gone, it's all suburb. When she was growing up, the county population was 66,000... now it's pushing 300,000.

Jerry, if you know where the Mastodon site is, she was within a short horse ride of there... back when you had roads that it was safe to ride horses on.

I know where that is. Never got a chance to really explore the place, as we moved in 1967 and did not get up that way much after that.

Should have mentioned that we were right near the Shaw Gardens. It was at the corner where we turned onto the gravel road that led past the entrance to the farm where we lived. We were way up from the road, though.

In an interesting aside, when I took my father to the first 292 Combat Engineer unit reunion, in the early 80s, we found out that one of his squad members lived just a few miles from where we did when we lived on that mini homestead. Neither new it until they met again at that reunion.

Just my opinion.

Owldancer,
I just ignore that part of the state. They can stay over there as West Illinois and I can stay where I am in a beautiful area that is still agricultural. Of course I won't go into downtown KC either.

As I was rereading the article and threads, an idea came to me.  Prepping is not the same thing as living off the grid.  Not all people who live off the grid are prepping, and not all people who are prepping live off the grid.  I know some people who live off grid who have no more than a shotgun, for example, but all of the people that I know who are prepping have at least 5 guns of one sort or another.

Put things in a different perspective for me.
