(upd 12/8/17) Article - Mid-Scale Grain Gardening in Alaska
« on: December 05, 2017, 06:04:44 AM »
This is a multi-part article and I will update this post and thread as the other part(s) are available.

The article starts (Preamble) with the author's observations as a world traveler.  It is intended to be less than optimistic, so don't let it put you off from reading the rest of the article.

The author gives this "table of content" for his article:

  • Preamble: Why We All Should Become Increasingly Self-sufficient– The First Steps
  • Definition of Mid-Scale Grain Gardening
  • Crop Operations
  • Reaping and Drying
  • Threshing and Winnowing
  • Scaling Up Harvesting Operations
  • So, What To Do With All This Grain?

Should be interesting. I have long been an advocate of small scale to mid scale grain production for the gardener and homesteader.

I do hope the article covers rice, as well, though I am not sure about in Alaska. There is a misconception that rice must be grown in flooded paddies, which is not the case. It can be grown without flooding. It just does need the right amount of water at the right times.

Also looking forward to the harvesting and processing parts. Small scale mechanical harvesters are hard to come by, as are processors.

Just my opinion.

Part 3 is linked in my OP, below.

Note the pictures and text description of the home-built thresher and winnower.

I'd like to have plans for that device.  According to the author, they can be found on the 'net.  Search for "Rodale Thresher" (obviously, please avoid using Google(r) for this...  Try Startpage.com or DuckDuckGo.com)

The Ferrari Tractors site has a bunch of good material, including an article on small grain production.

Interesting, I lived in that California town before moving to Nevada.  Farm country...

Lots of PDF articles which may be of interest to the small/medium farmer / homesteader.

I found/downloaded/cut-paste/typed the pdf into a word doc. I also included some pics from the Alaska guy to flesh it out. To share the word doc, I’ll need email addresses.
