Threat Analysis Spreadsheet
« on: February 07, 2017, 01:46:51 PM »
I've spent over an hour trying to format this message so you can read it.  I give up.

So I'm attaching a TXT file, which you should (Cross your fingers) be able to read with YOUR word processor

The problem is that the font set available with this forum software does not recognize the same tab characters, so the format is scrambled.

I've explained why in the actual text document (attached) but in a nutshell, my Linux spreadsheet will not export a spreadsheet correctly to a Windows(r) format.  Sigh...

So we do it the hard way...

If you have trouble with this, let's meet somewhere and you can see the actual spreadsheet on my laptop.

When I get a chance, I will install open office and see if I can use some of the files.

Thanks.

I think I will be loose Friday after 1:30pm, if you let me know where to meet you.

Just my opinion..

Jerry,
Hmmm... My first choice would be the Liberty St. branch of the library, but they are not open on Friday.

I'd like to find a place that has a free 'net connection and I'm open to suggestions, so long as I can get there on my bike...

I also need to be able to plug in the laptop, battery does not work.

The Starbucks by the library is good, when their connection is up. They have had trouble with it from time time the last few months. Coffee/tea/hot chocolate is on me, if you do not object to the location.

Wendy's in the Kietzki Walmart would work, too.

Just let me know.

Let's try the Starbucks then.  I don't know about power access there, do you?

Depending on your schedule, we could try for a day on which the downtown library is open.  Sunday-Thursday?

Oops, yes you are correct.  They changed since last I was there.
See you around 10am, Monday then...

[edit]
Let's NOT show up earlier than just before opening at 10am.  It is much too cold to wait outside longer than necessary...

TWP and Jerry, did you get the spreadsheet to work?
Are you going to post it here?

Thanks

The short answer is: yes, we "kind of" have a working Threat Analysis spreadsheet.

There are differences in how our different OS's handle the spreadsheet code, but we were able to adjust and get the same operational features.  The biggest problems arise when we try to export in a 'non-native' format from our respective systems.

Since I use Linux and Jerry does Windows, we are working on polishing out respective copies.

Mine "works" for me and I'll link a copy of my current state-of-the-sheet, with the understanding that it is running on a Linux system.   No guarantees on your being able to convert with a Window(r) OS.

I used LibreOffice 5 for this and the format is Open Data Spreadsheet with the extension of .ods

I'll not try to convert this (export) in other formats because that is where Jerry's system and mine have problems.

The attached file is Threat_Analysis.ods and is 25.9 KB.

Some advisory warnings.  The user set values are NOT my current state of threat.  They are just values entered to test the computed values and be sure that the math works as I intend.  If you can use the spreadsheet, you must adjust the values to match your estimates of threat and effect level.

There are two "sheets", the first is the Threat Analysis and the second (Thanks to Jerry) contains an "effects" analysis entry form.

There needs to be some operating instructions added to this document, because it may not be clear what is needed...

I down loaded the attached file and opened it in open office(Windows 7) and it seems to be fine.
Not sure how to unprotect it, but the format of fields seems fine.

I don't understand why you assigned certain values for items.
Would love to sit down and have a long discussion about why you assigned those values but I think I am a bit far away for that.

It is a very interesting concept/form.

owldancer.  Do note my disclaimer that the values currently entered in the download are NOT my current assessment of the situation.  They are only test values used to play with the sheet.

You get to assign all threat values (they are in unprotected cells) based on YOUR assessment.   They are dynamic values and I find that most will change with events in the real world.

For instance, the flood assessment values, for me, are relatively low values due to my location.  I'm out of the flood plain so floods will have a secondary effect because they will displace people toward me and effect trucking and traffic.

On the second sheet (Threat effects) again, you get to select the degree of effect each element will have on a given threat.  I think the possible range of effects is described in the sheet header.

If you have questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

RE cell and sheet protection, there are a couple of menu options to turn protection on/off and to set the kind of protection applied to each.  Make a backup and then play with them.

I've tweaked the spreadsheet in post #11.  It is slightly larger.

The changes were only cosmetic, protecting some cells and making others automatically fill with correct title text.

Note that YOU must choose values which reflect your assessment of risk and effect.

If you can't decide how much risk or effect to assign, please feel free to ask for the opinions of other members.
