Flocks, if large enough, can be self-sustaining, but it is far better to be able to exchange hens and roosters with neighboring flocks.   That's what good neighbors are all about.

This is to keep some genetic diversity and avoid inbreeding.

Don't try to crossbreed chickens unless you really know what you are doing...
