Uses for Wood Ashes
• Furnace cement- mixed with salt and water into a thick paste, it repairs ovens and fireplace cracked or loose bricks.
• Insulation Fire Brick- when making a concrete block and fire brick oven, ashes can be used in place of vermiculite in the insulation layer.
• Garden fertilizer- for K, P & trace minerals.
• Removing hair- add to hot water to remove hair from hides.
• Aid Plucking- add to hot water to remove oils, wet and loosen feathers for poultry before plucking.
• Making Potassium Nitrate- Add to compote to making Salt Peter for extraction.
• Coop Litter Order- spread on chicken coop floor to eliminate odors and preserve nitrates in manure.
• Chicken’s Dust Baths- mixing with sand for natural mite control.
• Toilet Order Control- add to outhouse and bucket toilets to eliminate odors and retain nitrogen.
• Sandbur Suppression- spread on sandbur infestations to eliminate their seed from sprouting.
• Garden Pest Repellent- sprinkle ashes beside the row crops and on natural paths thru the garden to help discourage slugs and snails
• Fire Extinguisher- ashes dumped onto a fire will extinguish it by smothering; especially useful on grease and other liquid fires where water should not be used.
• Melting Snow and Ice- will help melt with chemical action but primarily by absorbing the sunlight warmth; best to add with sand for sidewalks.
• Glass Cleaner- rub on with newspaper to cuts oils & grease.
• Potash Extraction- by leaching ashes with boiling water and concentrating for soap production.
