This post is way past due, but here you go.
There is something about a knife that "draws" the attention of most men. Not sure if it's just part of our wiring or not, but, for me, they are magical.
But if you are going to buy a knife for a designated/specific purpose, don't stop your search when you evaluate the looks, feel and/or design. If you are need a knife to use for either a single or range of tasks, then it's extremely important that you balance the purchase criteria to include the type of steel the blade is made from.
The attached articles contain a real education and allow you to understand the way you should evaluate a "working" knife. These articles are similar in the type of information they cover, but they do so differently.
The first article is titled Best Knife Steels and How to Choose the Right Type. It is written by a former Marine. I recommend you look at this article first. He does a superior job of going through the entire purchase consideration process. Both articles describe various types of blade steels with pros and cons.
Enjoy!
