Unfortunately it is a truth that we learn from our mistakes.  The corollary is that you must survive the mistake...

Assuming that you do survive any level of emergency, even if it seems minor after the fact.  There are steps which you can take to lock in the lessons you were offered.

This article explains, in seven steps, how to benefit from the "learning experience".

1)  Ask yourself what the most difficult part of the emergency was.

2
)  Ask yourself if there was anything specific you could have done differently that would have made the emergency easier.

3)  Ask yourself what you could have had that would have made the emergency situation easier.

4)  Write down a physical list of the items that would’ve come in handy.

5)  Prioritize this list of items that would’ve helped you out.

6)  Get the items that would have been most helpful right away. Don’t hesitate.

7)  Ask yourself what the ideal situation would have been, and how close you are to it.
